The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) is Austria's central non-university institution for science and research. It has the legal task of "promoting science in every respect".

Founded in 1847 as a scholarly society, today with its more than 770 members and around 1,700 employees, it stands for innovative basic research, interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and the imparting of new knowledge - with the goal of contributing to scientific and societal progress.

In an interdisciplinary exchange, the members of the Academy make important future questions, advise politics and society, and inform the public about important scientific findings. In commissions , they address issues of high scientific and social relevance.

The ÖAW operates 28 research institutes in the field of innovative, application-oriented basic research in the humanities, cultural, social and natural sciences. It provides impetus by taking up forward-looking research topics and assuming responsibility for preserving and interpreting cultural heritage.
