in Leicester, UK

Space School UK runs summer programmes at the University of Leicester for young people with an interest in space, physics, astronomy & space science.

Our Programme

Here are some of the things you can expect during your time at Space School UK

Talks & Workshops

You’ll attend lectures and take part in interactive workshops on a wide range of topics from astrobiology to X-ray astronomy, given by University lecturers and Space School staff

Indoor skydiving

Get a taste of life in microgravity; float on a cushion of air as you learn to ‘fly’ in an indoor wind tunnel

Scuba Diving

Train like an astronaut and experience neutral buoyancy in our scuba diving sessions.   You’ll learn the basics of scuba diving and take part in a team challenge

Rocketry

Working in small groups, you’ll build a model rocket from scratch, then launch it on the final day in front of your friends and family.  Will you succeed in your mission?

Observing

Take an evening tour of the University telescopes – if the weather’s good you might spot Jupiter, or even Andromeda!   Or camp out with your fellow students for some stargazing…

National Space Centre

Spend a day at the National Space Centre; take part in a Space Masterclass, then look around the museum and catch a show at the Space Theatre!

Location

Space School UK and Senior Space School UK take place at the University of  Leicester

Each school is residential, and offers students a taster of what life at a university might be like.

Students stay in the University’s Halls of Residence in Oadby village, and attend talks, lectures and workshops at facilities at  the Department of Physics and Astronomy, which is a leading centre for space research in the UK.
