Job Description

Here at the Science Museum we are dedicated to 'Inspiring the Futures' of our younger visitors.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon, the Science Museum is holding a 'Summer of Space' Season of Events.

We want applications from STEM professions, people studying STEM subjects and people with a passion for all things Space. We’d like our visitors to hear from a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds, opinions and ideas about Space and the future of humanity beyond Earth.

Applications close at Midnight on Sunday 21 April.

Roles Available

Activity Leader

Do you have a great idea for a Space-themed activity which would be fun and engaging for families?We are looking for volunteers to lead their own space-themed activities. This is a rare opportunity to design and run your own event with families here at the Science Museum. Ideally you'll have some experience engaging with the public - and of course have a great idea!

Science on a Sphere Facilitator

Are you fascinated about the future of humanity in Space? Does the Moon fill you with wonder? Do you aspire to live on Mars? We are looking for volunteers to use our interactive exhibit 'Science on a Sphere' to engage visitors with human Space travel.

Science on a Sphere is a 2 meter diameter sphere in our Exploring Space Gallery. The Sphere uses video projections to explain complex environmental processes in a way that is fun and accessible for all!


Before applying for either of our roles you'll need to make sure you are able to attend one of our specifically designed training sessions.Training will cover all the logistical information you'll need to volunteer with us, along with our best tips and tricks for engaging your audience. It's a fun and interactive session so come ready to take part! All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.Training sessions will be available at the following dates/times:

  • Saturday 27 April (10:30 - 16:30)
  • Tuesday 30 April (14.30 - 20.00)
  • Friday 3 May (10:30 - 16:30)
  • Saturday 15 June (10:30 - 16:30)
  • Tuesday 25 June (14.30 - 20.00)

Volunteering Dates

The following dates are available to volunteer.

Activity leaders 

You must be available to commit to a minimum of 2 days (in addition to your training session)

  • May Half-Term - Saturday 25 May to Sunday 2 June (11:00 - 17:00)
  • Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July (11:00 - 17:00)

Science on a Sphere Facilitator

You must be available to commit to a minimum of 5 days (in addition to your training session)

  • May Half-Term - Saturday 25 May to Sunday 2 June (11:00 - 16:00)
  • School Summer Holidays - Saturday 20 July to Sunday 1 September (11:00- 16:00)
