The UCL Observatory at Mill Hill (London) is a teaching facility associated with the UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy. Teaching, public outreach and research activities (in a 60/30/10 split respectively) are carried out and require a broad range of expertise in the area of telescope technology, electronics, mechanical and electrical engineering. The main duties of the role, which supports all activities, will include aiding with technical, mechanical and electrical work as well as supporting the educational activities.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy has 85 academic staff whose work is supported by 75 researchers and 35 professional services staff. We recruit approximately 130 undergraduate students each year for degrees in Physics and Astronomy, some of whom attend courses at the Observatory. The Observatory is located in Mill Hill with four dedicated full-time members (two technicians and two teaching fellows) of staff on location. This will be the location for this role.
The candidates will have an overall ability to work within a light engineering environment and have a good knowledge of H&S and COSHH regulations.
Knowledge of astronomical equipment is desirable as well as practical knowledge in the dismantling and repair or modification of electrical systems as well as basic electronics, wiring and soldering skills.
The candidate will also be computer literate and possess good communication skills, verbal and written, have a good disposition in interacting with the public for outreach events.
