Job Description

The National Laboratories of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) provide world leading facilities and technology for UK and international researchers. We have a strong commitment to Public Engagement (PE), helping to deliver the STFC Public Engagement strategy, which is available here.  STFC is part of UK Research and Innovation and our national partners for PE include the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement, UK Space Agency and the Association for Science and Discovery Centres.

The PE activity at the laboratories is led by the National Laboratories Public Engagement (NLPE) group. The group has 11 staff, including the advertised role, in teams at the three main National Laboratory sites: the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, Daresbury Laboratory (near Warrington) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (in Oxfordshire). The successful candidate may base themselves at any of these sites. 

List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities

This is an exciting forward-looking role supporting the Head of Group in the next phase of the strategic development of the National Labs PE group. This will involve working collaboratively on multiple, complex projects and activities with the three site PE teams, and with other internal and external partners. The main areas of work will be:

  • Lead on the development of evaluation strategies and methodologies
  • Lead and support the development of group policies and processes
  • Support the development of strategic initiatives, currently the STFC Wonder initiative
  • Support the development of, and reporting on, strategies and annual plans
  • Manage small contracts and procurement
  • Fulfilment of all Safety Health & Environment (SHE) responsibilities, including group processes for SHE.

Contacts and Communication

The role will report to the Head of National Laboratories Public Engagement Group, based at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh.

The role entails extensive contacts with PE managers and the wider PE teams, including at Swindon Headquarters; external consultants and advisers, senior representatives of national STEM and Educational organisations.

Essential

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent experience
  • Up-to-date knowledge of STEM engagement concepts and approaches, including Science Capital
  • Writing evaluation plans for STEM engagement and handling quantitative and qualitative data
  • Knowledge of STFC science and technology areas and the range of applications
  • Development of PE activities
  • Delivery of PE activities to schools and public audiences, including families
  • Training and facilitation skills
  • Management of a portfolio of complex projects
  • Team player
  • Good written communication skills, for peers and senior management
  • Presenting to and influencing people at all levels
  • Proactive self-starter
  • Enthusiasm for STFC science and technology areas and the range of applications.

Desirable

  • Science degree (in any area) or equivalent
  • Qualification or equivalent in science communication, such as MSc
  • Development of PE policies and processes
  • Development of digital and online PE resources
  • Management experience of small teams or groups
  • Full driving license.
