Northern Space and Security (NORSS) (www.norss.co.uk), an innovative and agile Space Situational Awareness company, is proud to offer an extremely unique and highly desirable position working as a Junior Orbital Analyst reporting to the UK Space Agency (UKSA). 

The role involves working alongside the UKSA Senior Orbital Analysts, and the RAF space staff in the UK’s Space Operations Centre (UKSpOC). Day-to-day duties will include ensuring the safety of UK licenced or critical spacecraft is involved in high-interest event by monitoring, evaluating and reporting on key space events (such as re-entering objects, collision avoidance activities and fragmentations of objects) to inform UKSA senior stakeholders.

The role will also help build and develop the UK governments Space Surveillance and Tracking capability in the future, enabling the successful candidate to have a pivot role in shaping the future in this area.

We are looking for a candidate with a sound academic qualification, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and be hard working and flexible. No formal experience in astrodynamics or orbital mechanisms is required (although this is a bonus), as significant on the job training will be given to perform these functions effectively.

The successful candidate should be able to have some level of software development or coding experience (ideally in Java but C++, Python or Matlab are also as acceptable) to help develop tools in order to make day-to-day activities more efficient. This is an extremely unique role and will enable the successful candidate to network within both the civil and military space, an opportunity that is seldom seen for early career graduates and gain a significant amount of broad space experience very rapidly.

Start Date: As soon as possible

Job Role Hours: 

  • Contract start – 1st Oct 2020 or earlier if available - Mon-Fri 9:00-17:00 or equivalent-40 hour
  • 2nd Jan 2021 – Onwards – Shift pattern 4 days on/4 days off – hours to be determined

  • Contract start – 1st Jan 2021 – Initially working from home is possible or from a choice of three NORSS offices:
  • NORSS Durham HIVE office (Aykley Heads, Durham)
  • NORSS Head Office (Alnwick, Northumberland)
  • NORSS Harwell Office (Harwell, Oxford)
  • 2nd Jan 2021 – Onwards – RAF High Wycombe (https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/stations/raf-high-wycombe/) on completion of appropriate security vetting

Salary: £22,500 until successful completion of 6 month probation period, moving to £25,000 

Security: The individual must be a UK National due to security clearance required and be willing to undergo appropriate security clearance

  • Academic study in a relevant field (physics, mathematics, engineering)


  • At a year in the space industry focussed on SST/SSA and/or space systems
  • Performing in a high-pressure environment

  • Space Situational Awareness, Space Weather and Space Surveillance and Tracking
  • SST modelling and analysis
  • Development of automated scripts and/or simple software products



  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in a relevant field (physics, mathematics, engineering) or strong experience in the space industry with A-Level mathematics


  • A recognised master’s degree 2:1 or above
