Job Description

You work will be mostly UK-based but there may also be opportunities to work overseas for short periods. You will work as part of a project team and provide the expertise required to develop, apply and advise on the use of GIS, and other analytical techniques to delivering data, information and products.

You will be expected to contribute to the full process of product development and be involved from initial ideas, through development, to stakeholder engagement, thereby ensuring suitable delivery of geoscience information to our users. You will play a key role in the deployment of geospatial analytics more widely within the organisation, and in collaboration with other academic and industrial partners.

The primary tasks of this role will be:

  • Working as part of a team, investigate and deploy novel geospatial techniques e.g. temporal data analytics and DTM/catchment derivatives to deliver a diverse range of geoscience products and services
  • Work as part of a team to assess legacy databases and form part of a taskforce to consider, realign and implement new digital map workflows
  • Contribute to the production of new, innovative commercial information products for use in hazard & resilience modelling and for properties and resource analysis, such as the current developments of climate change and hazard-resilience geodata products, BGS Civils and data4sustainable energy
  • Collation and interpretation of geo-environmental data in a robust and consistent manner
  • Desktop GIS development/programming to create efficient workflows for product creation
  • Lead small projects to develop and publish baseline data components (e.g. automated geomorphometry of LIDAR and radar datasets, cell-based modelling analysis from various types of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs))
  • The role will require travel to fulfil project roles within the UK and possibly internationally. Applicants may also be expected to attend conferences and workshops (nationally and internationally).

Other tasks will involve:

  • The application of ‘Big data’ (including temporal) analytical techniques to geoscience research and innovation; especially in understanding process and forecasting
  • Contribute to reports, scientific papers and knowledge dissemination of BGS products and data
  • Take part in meetings and contribute to a culture of strong stakeholder focus
  • Contribute to communication of the work of the Products teams through conference presentations, attendance at workshops and online presence.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Must have a 2:1 in a relevant degree (environmental sciences, spatial data).

Desirable:

  • A postgraduate degree in GIS.

Experience

Essential: 

  • Relevant post-graduate experience (of the order of 2- 3 years) using a range of GIS technologies to create spatial or spatio-temporal outputs (preferably ESRI, or open source GIS i.e. QGis)
  • Post-graduate experience of application of data modelling and geoprocessing in 2D and 3D space
  • Experience of working with and implementing data models and data management workflows
  • Experience of discussing ideas and projects with a range of customers and clients
  • Experience of project management.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in a research and development environment
  • Experience of working in a public sector (or commercial) environment
  • Experience of creating or delivering spatial data products or paid-for digital services.

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Can deploy (and understands the application of) geoprocessing techniques (using a range of different GIS tools)
  • An understanding of geological map data, its range of components (e.g. rock types, structures, symbols, annotation, etc.)
  • Has good knowledge of and can deploy data analytics to answer a range of data problems.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of database design issues and ability to explain requirements to database developers
  • A good understanding of the concepts behind data management in a relational database
  • Is familiar with applying a range of data types (e.g. UKCP18) to analyses scientific impacts.

Skills and Abilities

Essential:

  • Ability to script processing tasks (via open source programming, i.e. python, or dedicated interfaces i.e. model builder/FME)
  • Must demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, be able to communicate effectively with junior and senior members of staff
  • Proven ability of good time management skills
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to prioritise work and meet tight deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Full driving licence
  • Ability to deploy SQL or similar.
