The Science & Technology Facilities Council is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The UK has invested £99m in the New National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF), which is currently in construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, Oxfordshire. It will provide world-class co-located facilities for the final integration and testing of space payloads and satellites used for Earth Observation, Astronomy or even to explore other astronomical bodies such as the Moon, or Mars. The new facilities will have the capability to conduct Vibration, Acoustic, Thermal, Pyroshock, Electromagnetic compatability (EMC) and Antenna testing for spacecraft and associated payloads up to 7 tonnes. It is currently in construction and will become operational in summer 2021.
About the role
You will work within a small team supporting both the operation of the existing infrastructure and the new NSTF, as it is brought into a commissioned state. The current facilities include multiple cleanrooms, fixed cranes, and mobile handling equipment. You will work closely with the centralised maintenance function to ensure maintenance is scheduled at a time where disruption to services is minimised whilst ensuring they have appropriate and safe access to the areas they need. The role will be split between working in a cleanroom environment and an office or light industrial environment.
Cleanroom operation will include performing measurements of cleanroom parameters and Electro Static Discharge performance, general cleanroom housekeeping, operating a stick control system and supporting the movement of items under test, such as instruments and satellites between facilities.
General Building and logistics support will include assisting in accepting deliveries and movement within the building of large items utilising forklifts and cranes, liaising with the estates teams, providing short safety briefings to users of the facilities and portable appliance testing.
You will have the ability to follow written procedures and produce relevant documentation, demonstrable commitment to safe working, experience of using multiple software packages including Word and Excel. Good logistical and resource management skills are key and the ability to produce technical and safety risk assessments in line with legislation. You will have good team working and collaboration skills and excellent communications skills both written and verbal.
