Mechanical AIT Technician
Salary: £31,931 per annum
Hours: Full time/Part time (minimum considered 20 hours per week)
Contract: Permanent 
Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell, Oxfordshire

RAL Space is an integral part of STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). RAL Space carries out world-class space research and technology development with involvement in over 210 space missions over its 50+ year history. ​ ​

Working in the RAL Space Production Group as a mechanical instrument Technician, you will become a key member of a small team, involved in the build and test of a variety of complex space and ground based instruments. You will also get to work with other world class space organisations from all around the world all working together to better understand the origins of the universe and improve our understanding of our own planet.


The instrument technician will learn the specific skills required for the assembly and test of both specialised mechanisms and hardware as well as the more general assembly skills. The role is an interesting and varied role, changing on a daily basis to meet the needs of projects across STFC as well as has the potential for you to develop.

The role may include, but is not limited to:

  • Precision assembly of space flight equipment and mechanical assemblies to written procedures
  • Preparation and identification of parts and assemblies using CAD drawings and procedures
  • Providing advice to both mechanical designers and section staff in the techniques to be used in the assembly of equipment
  • Assembly of jigs and fixtures as required to support the operations of the group
  • Laser marking and parts control of flight hardware
  • Carry out precision cleaning activities on flight hardware
  • Carry out inspections and generation of reports
  • Work within the RAL Space ISO9001 system

The role may require occasional national and international travel when travel is permitted and will require the ability to work in a cleanroom environment. Shift work/overtime may be required at certain times.

Person Specification

About you:

  • Apprenticeship, ONC, or equivalent in Engineering or related subject
  • Experience building or handling flight quality aerospace hardware
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
  • Ability to follow and implement detailed assembly procedures 
  • Ability to recognise and record non-conformances 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Excellent attention to detail
