At Lumi, we are developing space lasers to make the satellite industry more sustainable. We're looking for engineers that bring creative, alternative methods that aren't always used but that bring objective advantages.


The role will involve:

  • Mechanical design of ground-based optical systems
  • Assisting requirements gathering for opto-mechanical systems
  • Responsible for prototyping and testing of mechanical components
  • Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers
  • Feeding in to broader system design


Lumi Space is on a mission to develop the world’s first commercial satellite laser ranging network and service to enable a sustainable future in space.

Person Specification


  • Degree in Mechanical engineering, Physics, Optics, or similar
  • Demonstrated experience with mechanical design for optical systems
  • Experience with rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques
  • Strong user of CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks)
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills


  • PhD in Astronomy/Optics/Physics
  • Experience with various types of optical systems/components such as telescopes, cameras, lasers, LIDAR, lenses, mirrors is highly desirable
  • Experienced user of optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio is desired but not essential
  • Experience working with institutional customers and academic partners
